Lynd Kendall Ward

Lynd Kendall Ward (1905-1985) was an American artist, illustrator, and author renowned for his pioneering wordless novels in woodcuts, such as God's Man (1929), which influenced the graphic novel genre. Born in Chicago to a Methodist minister father, he studied fine arts at Teachers College, Columbia University, and wood engraving in Leipzig, Germany. Ward illustrated over 200 books, including children's titles by his wife May McNeer, and won the Caldecott Medal in 1953 for The Biggest Bear.
