Ludwig Freiherr von 1854-1928 Pastor

Ludwig Freiherr von Pastor (1854-1928) was a prominent German historian and diplomat, best known for his monumental 16-volume work 'Geschichte der Päpste seit dem Ausgang des Mittelalters' (History of the Popes from the Close of the Middle Ages), published between 1886 and 1933. A Catholic scholar, he served as professor of history at the University of Innsbruck and as Austrian envoy to the Vatican. He was ennobled by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1908 and nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature six times.
