Lucy Rider Meyer

Lucy Rider Meyer (1849-1922) was an American social worker, educator, physician, and author who cofounded the Chicago Training School for City, Home, and Foreign Missions in 1885.[1] She is credited with reviving the office of the female deacon (deaconess) in the U.S. Methodist Episcopal Church, earning her the nickname 'Archbishop of Deaconesses.'[1] Meyer's work in training and organizing workers to provide health and social services for the poor, elderly, and children made her a leading force in Methodist urban social work.[4]
