Lucasfilm Ltd. is an American film and television production company founded by filmmaker George Lucas in 1971 in San Rafael, California, following the release of his debut feature THX 1138, to gain creative independence away from Hollywood.[1][2][3] It became renowned for the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, pioneering visual effects through Industrial Light & Magic, and was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2012 for $4.05 billion.[3][6] The company is headquartered in San Francisco's Letterman Digital Arts Center.[3]
