Luc Sante

Lucy Sante (formerly Luc Sante) is a Belgian-born American writer, critic, and artist known for her vivid histories of New York City's underbelly and cultural essays. Born in Verviers, Belgium, in 1954, she immigrated to the United States in the early 1960s and gained acclaim with books like Low Life: Lures and Snares of Old New York (1991) and Evidence (1992). She documented her gender transition in the memoir I Heard Her Call My Name (2024) and contributes frequently to The New York Review of Books.
