Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet is a renowned travel guidebook publishing company founded in 1972 by Tony Wheeler and his wife Maureen after their overland trip from Europe to Australia highlighted a lack of budget travel information. Their first guide, *Across Asia on the Cheap*, evolved into *South East Asia on a Shoestring*, which became a backpacker's bible and propelled the company to become the world's largest travel guidebook publisher. The name derives from a misheard lyric 'lovely planet' in a song by Matthew Moore.[2][1][3]
