Línjì Yìxuán

Línjì Yìxuán (died 866 CE) was a Chinese Chan Buddhist master during the Tang Dynasty and the founder of the Linji school of Zen Buddhism, which later influenced the Rinzai school in Japan.[1][5] Trained under master Huangbo Xiyun and enlightened by the monk Dàyú, he moved to the Linji temple in Hebei in 851, from which he took his name and established his lineage.[1][6] His teachings, recorded in the Linji lu, are known for their directness, including the use of shouting and beatings to shock students into enlightenment.[5][6]
