Linda B. Gambrell, PhD, was a distinguished literacy researcher, educator, and leader who began her career as an elementary classroom teacher and reading specialist in Prince George's County, Maryland, before earning her BS, MEd, and PhD in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland, College Park. She served as Associate Dean for Research at the University of Maryland, principal investigator at the National Reading Research Center, and from 1999 as Distinguished Professor of Education at Clemson University, where she directed the School of Education and taught literacy courses until becoming Professor Emerita. A past president of the International Literacy Association, Literacy Research Association, and Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers, she was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame in 2004 and co-edited Reading Research Quarterly, authoring extensively on literacy motivation, reading comprehension, and instructional strategies before her death on August 5, 2024, at age 82.[1][2][3][4]
