Kenneth L. Pike

Kenneth L. Pike (1912–2000) was an influential American linguist and anthropologist who originated the theory of tagmemics and coined the terms 'emic' and 'etic' to distinguish between subjective and objective linguistic analysis. He served as president of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) for 37 years and conducted extensive research on aboriginal languages across the globe, authoring over 30 books and 200 scholarly articles. Pike was a key figure in the Ann Arbor school of descriptive linguistics and developed the constructed language Kalaba-X for teaching translation theory.
