Kathi Appelt
Kathi Appelt is an award-winning American author of over 50 children's books, ranging from picture books to young adult novels and poetry, including National Book Award finalists *The Underneath* (2008) and *The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp* (2013).[1][2][3][5][6][8] Born on July 6, 1954, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to teenage parents Bill Cowgill and Patricia Walker Childress, she earned a B.A. from Texas A&M University in 1979 and began her prolific writing career in earnest with *Elephants Aloft* in 1993.[1][2][3] She lives in Texas, where she has taught, worked in children's books retail, and contributed to community organizations.[2][3]
