Juan Carlos Onetti

Juan Carlos Onetti (1909-1994) was a Uruguayan novelist and short story writer, renowned for his fictional city of Santa María and works like 'A Brief Life' and 'The Shipyard.' A self-taught writer and journalist, he faced persecution under Uruguay's 1974 dictatorship, leading to his exile in Spain where he received the Cervantes Prize in 1980. He is considered one of the greatest modernist writers in Spanish-language literature.
