Juan A. Corretjer
Juan Antonio Corretjer Montes (1908-1985) was a renowned Puerto Rican poet, journalist, and pro-independence activist who opposed U.S. colonial rule. He joined the Nationalist Party in 1930, was imprisoned multiple times including with Pedro Albizu Campos from 1936-1940 for seditious conspiracy, and founded groups like the Liga Socialista Puertorriqueña in 1964. Celebrated as Puerto Rico's 'national poet,' he authored poetry collections such as 'Yerba Bruja' and books on Puerto Rican history and politics.
