JR Hartley

J.R. Hartley is a fictional elderly character created for a popular 1983 British Yellow Pages advertisement, in which he searches bookstores for his out-of-print book *Fly Fishing*.[2][1] In 1991, angling expert Michael Russell wrote and published *Fly Fishing: Memories of Angling Days* under the pseudonym J.R. Hartley, capitalizing on the ad's fame, and it became a bestseller with over 130,000 copies sold in one Christmas season.[1][3][4]
