Joyce Jeffries

Joyce Jeffreys (also spelled Jeffries) (c. 1570 – 1650) was a single female moneylender in seventeenth-century England who lived most of her adult life in Hereford.[1] She successfully developed her business through family connections, supporting herself and a substantial household, and kept an account book from 1638 to 1648 that provides insight into provincial gentry life during the First English Civil War.[1][5] During the war, she fled Hereford in 1642 due to advancing parliamentary troops.[1]
