John W. Young

John Watts Young was an American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot, and aeronautical engineer who became the first person to fly into space six times, including Gemini 3 and 10, Apollo 10, Apollo 16 (where he walked on the Moon), and Space Shuttle missions STS-1 and STS-9.[1][2][4] Selected by NASA in 1962, he served as Chief of the Astronaut Office from 1974 to 1987 and retired in 2004 after 42 years with the agency, renowned for his commitment to flight safety.[2][4][5] He died on January 5, 2018, in Houston, Texas.[2][4][8]
