John Sommerville
John Somerville was a philosopher born in New York City on March 13, 1905, who earned three degrees from Columbia University, including a Ph.D. in 1938, and taught at Hunter College from 1939 to 1967, becoming Professor Emeritus. He authored Soviet Philosophy in 1946, the first Western book on the subject from original sources, and later became a prominent peace activist, coining the term 'omnicide' to warn against nuclear war, founding peace organizations, and receiving awards like the Bertrand Russell Peace Award and Gandhi Peace Prize. He died in El Cajon, California, on January 8, 1994.
