John Smith
Captain John Smith (c. 1579/1580–1631) was an English soldier, explorer, and author best known for his leadership in establishing Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. He fought in Europe, was enslaved and escaped, mapped the Chesapeake Bay, and promoted colonization through writings like The Generall Historie of Virginia. After injuries forced his return to England, he authored accounts of his adventures until his death in London.
