John Merriam Kingsbury

John Merriam 'Jack' Kingsbury (1928-2023) was an American botanist, professor emeritus at Cornell University, and co-founder of the Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island in the Gulf of Maine. He authored books on poisonous plants and North American botany, transforming a remote island into an immersive field station for undergraduate marine science education through collaborations with Cornell and the University of New Hampshire. Kingsbury joined Cornell's faculty in 1954, rising to professor before becoming emeritus in 1983.
