John McCain
John McCain was an American politician and naval officer who represented Arizona in the United States Congress for over 35 years, serving in the House of Representatives (1983-1987) and the Senate (1987-2018). A decorated war hero who was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and held as a prisoner of war for five years, McCain became known as a political maverick who often voted against his Republican Party on principle. He was the Republican Party's presidential nominee in 2008 but was defeated by Barack Obama.
