John MacGillivray
John MacGillivray (1821-1867) was a Scottish naturalist and prolific collector who spent most of his career in Australia and the Pacific islands between 1842 and 1867. He served as naturalist on several British naval expeditions, most notably HMS Fly (1842) and HMS Rattlesnake (1848), during which he collected and documented vast numbers of plant and animal specimens. He is particularly noted for his meticulous records of aboriginal languages and his significant contributions to natural history, especially regarding bird species on Cape York Peninsula.
