John Gillis

John R. Gillis was an American historian specializing in European family history, later focusing on environmental and cultural histories of islands, coastlines, and seafaring. He earned a BA from Amherst College in 1960 and a PhD from Stanford University in 1965, taught at Princeton and Rutgers University where he was Professor Emeritus, and authored books such as Islands of the Mind (2004) and The Human Shore (2012). He died in Berkeley, California, on December 7, 2021.[1][2][3]
