John Gadsby Chapman

John Gadsby Chapman (1808–1889) was an American artist renowned for his history painting 'Baptism of Pocahontas,' commissioned by the United States Congress and displayed in the Capitol rotunda. A pioneer in book illustration, he created over 1,400 wood engravings for Harper's Illuminated Bible and authored the influential 'American Drawing-Book.' He trained under Charles Bird King, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and spent much of his later career in Europe, producing portraits, landscapes, and historical works.[1][2][4]
