John Brown

John Brown was an American abolitionist born on May 9, 1800, in Torrington, Connecticut, to a religious anti-slavery family, who developed a fervent commitment to ending slavery after personal tragedies and business failures. He led violent actions against slavery, including the 1856 Pottawatomie massacre and the 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, viewing himself as a divine messenger on a mission to eradicate the institution. Captured, tried for treason, and hanged on December 2, 1859, he became a martyr for the abolitionist cause, inspiring the Union effort in the Civil War.
