John Antonio 1878- Hain
John Milton Hay (1838-1905) was an American statesman, diplomat, author, and poet who served as private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln and later as U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. In 1878, he became Assistant Secretary of State and co-authored an influential biography of Lincoln with John Nicolay. He is renowned for promoting the Open Door Policy in China and describing the Spanish-American War as a 'splendid little war.'
