John and Anne Spencer

Anne Bethel Spencer (born Bannister) was an American poet, teacher, librarian, civil rights activist, and gardener associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Henry County, Virginia, she lived most of her life in Virginia and published influential poetry while also hosting Black intellectual and cultural figures at her home in Lynchburg.
