Joan Lock

Joan Lock, born September 26, 1933, in New Malden, Surrey, England, trained as a nurse before serving six years as a policewoman in London's West End during the 1950s, an era when few women were in law enforcement.[1][2] She drew on these experiences to write her debut book *Lady Policeman* in 1969 and *The British Policewoman: Her Story* in 1979, establishing herself as an authority on early British women police.[1][2] Lock later authored non-fiction on Scotland Yard history and Victorian-era crime fiction featuring Inspector Ernest Best, with her most recent book *Pistols, Bombs, and Motor Bandits* published in 2021.[2][3]
