James Graham 'J.G.' Ballard (1930–2009) was an English novelist, short story writer, satirist, and essayist known for psychologically provocative science fiction exploring human psychology, technology, sex, and mass media. Born in Shanghai, China, he spent his early years there, interned in a Japanese civilian camp during World War II, experiences that influenced works like his semi-autobiographical novel Empire of the Sun.
