Jefferson Davis
Jefferson Davis (1808–1889) was an American politician, military officer, and the only president of the Confederate States of America, serving throughout the Civil War. Before the war, he represented Mississippi in Congress and served as U.S. secretary of war under President Franklin Pierce. After the Confederacy’s defeat, he was imprisoned and later wrote a two-volume defense of his actions, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government.
