James R. Lawson
James Morrison Lawson Jr. was an American minister, activist, and educator pivotal in the civil rights movement, training activists including those who formed the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in Gandhian nonviolent direct action tactics. Martin Luther King Jr. called him 'the leading theorist and strategist of nonviolence in the world.' He led protests, supported the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers' strike, and continued advocating for justice until his death.
