James Mark Baldwin

James Mark Baldwin (1861–1934) was an American philosopher and psychologist who made significant contributions to early psychology, developmental theory, and evolutionary thought, including the 'Baldwin effect' linking individual learning to phylogenesis. Educated at Princeton and German universities, he held faculty positions at the University of Toronto, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins, and co-founded the Psychological Review. His work influenced figures like Jean Piaget and emphasized individual differences, imitation in child development, and the integration of Darwinian evolution with psychology.
