James Lowen

James W. Loewen was an American sociologist, historian, and author renowned for critiquing distortions in American history textbooks, most notably in his bestselling book *Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong*, which has sold over 2 million copies. He taught race relations for twenty years at the University of Vermont after earlier teaching at Tougaloo College in Mississippi, and continued researching how Americans remember their past while living in Washington, D.C.[1][2][4][5]. Loewen received numerous awards for his anti-racist scholarship and social justice contributions before his death in 2021.
