James L. Roark

James L. Roark is a retired American historian and Emeritus Professor of American History at Emory University, specializing in Southern history and nineteenth-century American history. He is the author of 'Masters without Slaves' and coauthor of 'Black Masters,' and is well known for coediting the widely used textbook 'The American Promise: A History of the United States.' Roark was recently honored with the creation of the Roark Prize for undergraduate research, endowed by young alumni in his name.
