James Clarke Holt
Sir James Clarke Holt (1922–2014) was an English medieval historian renowned for his groundbreaking work on Magna Carta, which he first published in 1965 and was the first to place in its legal and historical context.[1][5] He held academic positions at the University of Nottingham, University of Reading, and University of Cambridge, where he served as Professor of Medieval History from 1978 and as the third Master of Fitzwilliam College from 1981 to 1988.[1][2] His research spanned over fifty years and covered diverse topics including the reign of King John, English northern barons, and the mythical figure of Robin Hood.[2]
