J R R Tolkien
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) was an English writer and philologist who achieved fame with his children's book The Hobbit (1937) and his epic fantasy masterpiece The Lord of the Rings (1954-55). He was a scholar and professor at Oxford University who created the richly inventive world of Middle-earth, drawing inspiration from his experiences in World War I and his lifelong fascination with language.
