J. Dennis Summers-Smith

James Denis Summers-Smith (1920–2020) was a Scottish ornithologist and mechanical engineer specializing in sparrows, particularly the House Sparrow, and industrial tribology. Born in Glasgow, he studied metallurgy and earned a PhD in physics, while making significant contributions to ornithology as an amateur naturalist, including authoring the Passeridae section in the Handbook of the Birds of the World. His lifelong study of sparrows earned him the Stamford Raffles Prize from the Zoological Society of London.
