J. Craig Venter

J. Craig Venter is an American biologist and entrepreneur renowned for leading one of the first draft sequences of the human genome through Celera Genomics and pioneering synthetic biology by creating the first self-replicating bacterial cell with synthetic DNA in 2010[1][2][5]. He founded the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in 1992, Celera Genomics in 1998, and the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) in 2006, advancing genomics research including sequencing of the fruit fly, mouse, rat, and other organisms[1][3][5]. After serving in the Vietnam War as a Navy Corpsman, he earned his PhD from the University of California, San Diego, and has received numerous accolades including the National Medal of Science[2][5].
