Irene Hunt
Irene Hunt (1907–2001) was an American children's author and former teacher renowned for her historical novels. Inspired by her grandfather's Civil War stories, she published her debut novel *Across Five Aprils* in 1964 at age 57, earning a Newbery Honor, followed by the Newbery Medal-winning *Up a Road Slowly* in 1967. Her works are celebrated for strong character development, historical authenticity, and tackling themes of loss, growth, and social issues.
