Immanuel C. Y. Hsu
Immanuel Chung-Yueh Hsu (1923–2005) was a prominent Chinese-American sinologist and historian specializing in modern Chinese intellectual and diplomatic history. After World War II, he studied in the United States, earning a master's from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate from Harvard, before becoming a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he taught until 1991. His most influential work, *The Rise of Modern China*, is a standard textbook surveying Chinese history from 1600 to the present.
