Black Elk was a prominent Oglala Lakota holy man, healer, and warrior whose life spanned a period of profound upheaval for Native peoples in North America. He is best known through accounts of his visions and religious thought, especially those recorded by John Neihardt in *Black Elk Speaks* and by Joseph Epes Brown in *The Sacred Pipe*.
