Henry Pottinger
Sir Henry Pottinger (1789–1856) was a British military officer, diplomat, and colonial administrator, born at Mount Pottinger, County Down, Ireland.[1][4][6] He is renowned for negotiating the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, ending the First Opium War and ceding Hong Kong to Britain, and served as the first Governor of Hong Kong from 1843 to 1844.[1][2] Earlier, he conducted missions to Sind and Persia, rising to Lieutenant-General in the Bombay Army.[1][4]
