Nathaniel Hawthorne was a prominent 19th-century American novelist and short story writer, best known for his dark romantic works such as 'The Scarlet Letter' and 'The House of the Seven Gables'. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, he drew heavily from his Puritan ancestry and the history of colonial New England to explore themes of guilt, morality, and the supernatural. He is considered a master of the allegorical and symbolic tale within the American Romantic movement.
