Harvey Shapiro

Harvey Shapiro was an American poet and editor, born in Chicago in 1924, who grew up in New York City speaking Yiddish and served as an Air Force tail gunner in World War II. He earned degrees from Yale and Columbia, worked for nearly 40 years at The New York Times including as editor of the Book Review, and authored a dozen books of poetry on themes like war, Jewish roots, and New York City. Shapiro died in 2013 at age 88.
