Joseph Isadore Lieberman was an American politician and lawyer who served as a U.S. Senator from Connecticut from 1989 to 2013, initially as a Democrat and later as an Independent.[1][3] He was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in the 2000 election alongside Al Gore, becoming the first Jewish candidate on a major party presidential ticket.[1][3] Known for his bipartisan approach, he played key roles in creating the Department of Homeland Security and repealing the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy.[6]
