H. Adams Carter

H. Adams Carter (1914-1995) was a pioneering American mountaineer, language teacher, and editor of the American Alpine Journal for 35 years, renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of mountains and mountaineering. He participated in significant expeditions, including the 1936 British-American Himalayan Expedition that climbed Mount Nanda Devi, the highest peak ascended at that time, and explored vast glaciers in Alaska. After Harvard, he expanded his family's business into the world's largest producer of carbon black and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, contributing to medical research.
