George Strickland Kingston

Sir George Strickland Kingston (1807-1880) was an Irish-born engineer, architect, surveyor, and politician who served as Deputy Surveyor to William Light in the founding of South Australia, arriving in 1836.[1][2] He played a key role in colonial development, including surveying Adelaide, promoting mining interests, and entering politics as a radical reformer in the Legislative Council from 1851.[1][2] Kingston became the first Speaker of the South Australian House of Assembly under responsible government and was knighted in 1870, dying at sea en route to India.[1][2][4]
