George P. (George Putnam) 1834-1 Upton

George P. Upton (1834-1919) was an American journalist, music critic, and author known for writing the first informed music criticism in Chicago and authoring handbooks on musical repertory such as symphonies, oratorios, and biographies of composers like Haydn.[1][2][3] Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, he graduated from Brown University in 1854, worked as a correspondent for the Chicago Tribune during the Civil War, and later became a prominent music writer and critic in Chicago until his death.[3][4]
