George Finlay
George Finlay (1799–1875) was a Scottish historian and Philhellene who arrived in Greece in 1823, fought in the Greek War of Independence, and remained there for the rest of his life, contributing to its institutions and chronicling its history. Born in Faversham, Kent, to a Scottish family, he studied law in Glasgow and Göttingen before being drawn to Greece by idealism and adventure. His seminal work, 'History of Greece from its Conquest by the Romans to the Present Time,' integrated Byzantine history into the Greek continuum and established him as a key chronicler of the era.[1][2][5]
