George C. Rogers Jr.
George C. Rogers Jr. (1922-1997) was a preeminent South Carolina historian born in Charleston, who earned B.A. degrees from the College of Charleston, served as a meteorologist in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.[3][4] He taught history at the University of South Carolina from 1958 until his retirement in 1986, becoming the Caroline McKissick Dial Professor in 1972, and served as editor and president of the South Carolina Historical Society.[1][3][5] Widely regarded as the dean of South Carolina historians, he authored influential works such as *The History of Georgetown County, South Carolina*.[1][8]
