Galen Rowell
Galen Avery Rowell (1940-2002) was an acclaimed American wilderness photographer, adventure photojournalist, mountaineer, and writer, renowned for capturing breathtaking images during extreme outdoor expeditions.[2][1] Born in Oakland, California, he began climbing as a teenager, achieved over 100 first ascents in the Sierra Nevada, and transitioned to full-time photography in 1972, publishing in National Geographic and authoring 18 books.[5][1] He founded Mountain Light gallery with his wife Barbara Cushman Rowell and received the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography in 1984, before perishing with her in a plane crash near Bishop, California, on August 11, 2002.[1][3]
