Fredrik Barth

Fredrik Barth was a distinguished Norwegian social anthropologist known for his transactionalist and actor-oriented processual perspectives, particularly in his studies of political processes in the Swat Valley and micro-economic processes in Sudan. He was a professor at five universities, including Boston, Harvard, and the University of Oslo, and founded the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen. Barth was widely recognized as one of the leading figures in world anthropology from the 1950s until the early 2000s.
